Survey of resident population aged 105 years and older

The survey of resident population aged 105 and over (defined in international classifications semi-supercentenarians population) collects information on surviving or deceased population over 105 years to provide a longitudinal database for that population group.

The data source, that is an administrative one, is the National Resident Population Register (ANPR). All municipalities that have at least one semi-supercentenarian among their residents are contacted by Istat in order to validate their actual presence (through the acquisition of a living existence certificate or, in case of death during the year, of a death certificate). In addition to this Istat collects other basic information about the semi-supercentenarian, such as date of birth, date of death, municipality of birth, marital status and citizenship.

People still alive are followed up every year until their death with the recording of the date of the event: as long as the individual remains alive, the validation process never stops. The data quality check for the database is also performed retrospectively in continuous mode. Every year Istat also proceeds to validate again backwards the data observed in the past, in order to ensure consistency in the extinction process of each individual generation. This activity can reveal differences between releases related to successive years of the database for the same generations involved, which is why it is always recommended to refer to the latest release.
